One of the most exciting parts of my job is going into sixth-grade classrooms all across Pittsburgh to recruit new additions to the Summerbridge Pittsburgh family. Seeing excitement in the faces of these sixth graders brings back fond memories of when I was first introduced to Summerbridge as a student. I remember sitting in an auditorium, packed with students, listening to the directors talk about all of the exciting things taking place at Sewickley Academy, a private school near Pittsburgh. That afternoon, I raced off the bus, Summerbridge application in hand, and couldn’t wait to tell my parents about the program.
This year, while recruiting at one of the Pittsburgh Public Schools, I met Austin. Although he was sitting in the very back of the room, Austin’s excitement was noticeable. Austin reminded me of myself, perched on the edge of his seat, eyes wide with anticipation. He listened attentively as we talked to the group about how Summerbridge could help place students on the path to college readiness. After my presentation, Austin called me over and told me that he had been talking about college to his family since the third grade. He couldn’t stop smiling and promised me that he was going to fill out his Summerbridge application as soon as he returned home that day.
Summerbridge has impacted the lives of over 800 students since its inception. Countless directors, teachers, and community members have worked hard to ensure that a quality education is within any child’s reach. Our team is so excited to kick off its 18th summer of academic fun on June 20!
