Getting to Know Mr. Josh Briggeman

We have some fantastic new faculty and staff this year at Sewickley Academy. In the next few weeks, we’ll introduce you to some of them!

Mr. Josh Briggeman - Assistant to the Head of Senior School

Josh began his work in the Senior School office earlier this summer. He is very familiar with independent schools having served as a history and geography teacher at the North Country School and The Darrow School. He also worked as a project coordinator with Computer Prompting and Captioning, the industry leader in closed captioning software. Josh earned his bachelor's in history from Kenyon College.

What was your favorite book as a child?

My favorite book bar none was The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. My family had a house way up north in Vermont, and the memories of the family gathering around the fire on those cold summer nights for my dad to read us the next chapter are some of the strongest from my childhood.

What is your favorite book as an adult?

A Soldier of The Great War by Mark Helprin. Great story, great imagery, and wonderful writing.

What are some of your interests/hobbies?

My wife and I play board games and we spend our weekends playing Ultimate Frisbee. We also like to brew beer.

Why did you choose to work at Sewickley Academy?

I chose to work at Sewickley Academy because I was born and raised in an independent school environment. I grew up on boarding school campuses where my parents worked, and after college I taught at schools in upstate New York. When I moved to Pittsburgh to be with my wife who is a doctoral candidate at the University of Pittsburgh, I began looking for jobs in education. I was lucky enough to interview here at Sewickley and loved the sense of community and feeling of purpose here that you just don't find outside of education.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

I'm most looking forward to getting over being "the new guy." I enjoy being able to help people and not having some institutional knowledge or the answer right away really sticks in my craw.

What community service activities or youth organizations are you involved in?

I have coached youth Ultimate Frisbee teams in the past and continue to be heavily involved in the Pittsburgh Ultimate community. Hopefully I will find a chance to continue coaching in the Pittsburgh area.

Have you had a chance to meet Josh yet? We're so happy to have him on board!
